Ukrainian Book Institute

The Ukrainian Book Institute is a government entity, part of the Ministry of Culture and Strategic Communications of Ukraine. Its mission is to shape state policy in the area of book publishing, promote book reading in Ukraine, support book industry, provide incentives for translations, and popularize Ukrainian literature abroad.

Despite the challenges of a full-scale war, we direct all our efforts to the realization of the set goals and tasks. Our steadfast commitment to the cause is based on the belief that even in turbulent times, the importance of books and culture in general cannot be underestimated. Our activity is evidence of the unchanging power of literature in the face of difficulties.

Arrowsmith Press

For too long, literary Ukraine has remained a blank slate for the West, neglected by publishers, anthologists, and translators. Thanks to the arrival on the scene of presses such as Lost Horse, HURI, the Poets of Queens, and Arrowsmith, that is no longer the case. Concentrating on publishing work by contemporary Ukrainian poets, Arrowsmith welcomes this opportunity to begin filling in the blanks. Our book offerings include a Selected Poems by Oksana Zabuzhko as well as collections by such writers as Griffin-Prize finalist Halyna Kruk, Oksana Lutshyshyna, Yulia Musakovska, Liudmila Khersonska and, coming this October, Yaryna Chornohuz.

Lost Horse Press

Established in 1998, Lost Horse Press is a proudly independent literary publisher specializing in poetry and translation. Our catalog boasts over 150 titles, including the award-winning Contemporary Ukrainian Poetry Series. We are dedicated to bringing underrepresented voices into print, supporting both emerging and established writers, and producing finely crafted books.

Deep Vellum Publishing

Deep Vellum was founded with the mission to bring the world into conversation through literature, believing that reading and writing are revolutionary acts that can and should change the world. Today, it’s more important than ever to listen to the voices of Ukraine—a country, a language, a culture that deserves to be more widely known, packed with writers of astounding ability and creativity, some of whom we are so lucky and so proud to publish.

Vilni Media

Vilni Media is an online platform that has been operating for over a year, since spring 2024, to support local Ukrainian communities by delivering up-to-date news, analysis, and information. The platform was created by Ukrainians in America and has an ambitious goal – to become one of the key information resources for Ukrainian communities in the United States. The media team includes journalists from Ukraine as well as authors and contributors who are Ukrainians, Americans of Ukrainian descent, and friends of Ukraine from the U.S.

At the core of Vilni Media’s creation is the need to strengthen the Ukrainian diaspora in the United States and to support cultural, educational, and civic exchange between Ukraine and America. The Vilni team seeks to unite the diverse Ukrainian diaspora through communication, ensuring access to relevant news, events, and initiatives. We want Ukrainians in America to feel heard and supported.

Academic Studies Press

Academic Studies Press is an independent scholarly publisher with a robust Ukrainian Studies series, edited by Vitaly Chernetsky, that publishes award-winning works spanning poetry, fiction, memoirs, historical analysis, scholarly monographs, and translations of Ukrainian literature previously unavailable in English. Since 2022, we’ve also launched the Ukrainian-Language Open Access Series to support Ukrainian scholars working under conditions of war.

The Ukrainian Book Challenge is essential to our mission because it demonstrates that there is a dedicated readership ready to sustain the risks publishers take in bringing Ukrainian voices to English-speaking audiences. Each purchase supports the entire ecosystem—translators, authors, editors, and publishers—who work to preserve and amplify Ukrainian culture, ensuring that Ukrainian literature and scholarship remain in active circulation as an act of preservation and resistance.
